How automation boosts continuity

How automation boosts continuity

Automation software has become a common component within various departments in the average organization, notably human resources, IT and accounting, as these tools can effectively reduce the amount of arduous work each employee must complete each day. However, the applications of automation software are relatively boundless, and companies that think outside the box can often find alternative operational areas that would be well-suited for an upgrade of this sort.

One area of corporate decision-making that has been in need of a widespread overhaul is business continuity and disaster recovery strategy, as several major natural and man-made events have caused a significant level of damage in the private sector of late. Automation can help to tackle several of the more critical aspects of disaster recovery more affordably than a company would be able to accomplish these tasks when not using the solutions.

Iron tight, yet agile
Computerworld recently suggested that businesses consider automating certain aspects of disaster recovery plan and technology testing, as this will enable much more consistent evaluations and assessments of the state of the strategy. When a disaster recovery plan – even a solid one – is deployed and then never refined or rarely reviewed, the chances of it being relevant to emerging threats becomes very thin.

As such, businesses are tasked with regularly evaluating their risks and the protections in place to mitigate them, which can be a central area where the plans frequently go wrong. According to the news provider, one study from Vanson Bourne revealed that the average enterprise is testing its data and system backup solutions four times a year, and that even these procedures are short-sighted and miss more than 90 percent of all systems.

It is not necessarily unbelievable that this would be the case, as proper testing can take significant amounts of time, especially when using a manual entry-styled approach.

Enter automation
Automated content management and systems checking solutions will immediately reduce the amount of time it takes the average employee to conduct a thorough evaluation of data and infrastructure-related assets. From the ability to eliminate data entry to the potential for continuous monitoring and evaluations through machines rather than personnel, automation can reduce errors and drive the accuracy of reporting in these and other processes.

Consequently, companies can expect to see higher engagement among staff members and stronger performance in the disaster recovery arena.
